The Daily News Continues to Experiment With Digital Media

The Daily News, founded on January 28, 1878, is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States. It is editorially and financially independent. The News is based in Yale University and serves the greater New Haven area of Connecticut. The News publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year and produces several special issues each year, including the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, Commencement Issue, First Year Issue and a Student Affairs Issue. The News also has a history of publishing a number of special issues celebrating the Yale community’s indigenous, black, Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in collaboration with campus cultural centers and affiliated student groups.

The paper has won a number of journalism awards and honors, including two Pulitzer Prizes, one for breaking the story of the Lindbergh kidnapping and another for the series “The Death of a City.” It has also been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Press Club.

At its peak in the mid-to-late 20th century, the Daily News had one of the largest circulations of any newspaper in the world. It fought off a fierce rival tabloid, the New York Post, and remained a front-runner in local news.

As the internet and other forms of digital media have grown in popularity, traditional newspapers have been losing circulation. In the past decade, the Daily News has been particularly hard hit, a trend that has accelerated in recent years. The newspaper’s owners, Mortimer Zuckerman, announced in 2017 that it would sell the Daily News to Tronc, a Chicago-based media company. The sale was completed in 2018.

In its place, the Daily News has begun experimenting with online and digital publications to see how it can continue to survive as a source of local news. This digital push has included the launch of a digital edition of the newspaper that can be read online or on smartphones. It has also launched a website that features original content and an interactive map of the city that highlights stories and events in the community.

The newspaper has also expanded its presence in the field of social media by creating an Instagram account that allows people to share photos and video with the Daily News. This account has more than 1.3 million followers and is used to showcase local news.

The future of local news is being redefined as people are taking on the responsibility of reporting their own stories. With this in mind, Death of the Daily News is a rich, fascinating and necessary anatomy of what happens when a town loses its local newspaper. This experiment offers clues to what the future of local journalism might look like in other communities as well. This important film will help to spark conversation about the value and importance of local news.
