The Daily News

Founded in 1919, the Daily News is the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States. Originally known as the Illustrated Daily News, it quickly became the country’s highest-circulation morning newspaper. The paper attracted readers by sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons. The Daily News is currently owned by Tronc, which bought the newspaper in 2017 for $1. The newspaper is based in New York City.

The newspaper provides a wide variety of local and national stories and opinions. Its editorial staff includes John Angell Grant, Larry Magid and John Reid, as well as syndicated columnists Bob Herbert, Thomas Friedman and Maureen Dowd. The Daily News also provides sports, comics and entertainment coverage. In addition, the News has a number of local and regional business and politics sections.

Each Daily News article contains comprehension and critical thinking questions, found below the article, to help students understand the news story. In addition, “Background” and “Resources” (including video clips, maps and links) are provided to enhance the reader’s understanding of the article.

The Daily News has also created a set of lesson plans, focusing on different aspects of the news stories. These lesson plans are downloadable in PDF form. They are free to download and can be used in the classroom, homeschool or as a supplement to any curriculum.

In addition to the articles, each Daily News issue also contains a large number of photographs and other graphics. Many of the photos are in color.

Daily News archives are available online through ProQuest Historical Newspapers. This database offers searchable full-text and page images for selected U.S. and international newspapers. Including titles such as the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today, the collection is an excellent source of information on events that occurred throughout the world.

In its earlier years, the Daily News often ran lurid, tabloid-sized pictures and headlines of the day. The newspaper was also an early user of Associated Press wirephoto services and maintained a large staff of photographers. It also featured a large amount of social intrigue, such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication.

Today, the Daily News covers a wide range of issues in an attempt to appeal to as many readers as possible. Some of the main topics include crime, politics, government, sports and entertainment. The newspaper is also a leader in investigative reporting.

Upon registering for access to the Daily News, users are given a login and password that can be used to view the online version of the newspaper each morning. The newspaper can be accessed anytime after 5:30 am each morning. Subscribers can check out the eNewspaper by clicking on the link on their account management page or by adding it as a shortcut to their mobile phone’s home screen.

The Daily News has a moderate-to-liberal bias in its political coverage and is often contrasted with the more conservative New York Post. Ad Fontes Media rates the New York Daily News as Skewed Left and Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting.
