The Daily News of New York
The New York Daily News is an American tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 and was the first tabloid published in the United States. It reached its peak circulation in the 1940s at 2.4 million copies per day. It has a long history of competing with the more sensational rival New York Post and in recent decades has struggled to keep up with declining print and online readership. In 2017 it was sold for $1 to Tronc, a Chicago-based media company. The newspaper’s website has closed, but its New York City and Brooklyn newsrooms continue to operate.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive is supported by an anonymous gift made in 2021, allowing the Library to migrate the archive to a more robust platform and facilitate the addition of issues beyond 1996. The archive is free to use and can be searched using your Hayward Public Library card. Unauthorized reproduction of the Yale Daily News and its articles is prohibited. For more information, please see the YDN Rights and Permissions page.
Daily News is the official newspaper of Yale University, publishing every weekday during the academic year, Monday through Friday. The News is the oldest college newspaper in the United States and has a long tradition of editorial independence from Yale administration. Many alumni of the News have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public service. The News is a member of the National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists.
News and politics, New York exclusives, sports, gossip and celebrity stories fill the pages of the Daily News. Its award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers cover the nation’s greatest city with a mix of pragmatism and passion. Whether you’re a Yankees, Mets or Giants fan, a Trump supporter or a die-hard Bernie Sanders supporter, the Daily News will keep you up to date with the latest in local, national and international news.
1440 is a pointless, brief aggregation of headlines and blurbs that seems to have been designed to appeal to those who want to believe they’re getting “nothing but the news.” It’s an insidiously misleading name for what amounts to nothing more than needless clickbait.
