The word poker may seem familiar, especially to those who’ve played in a casino. Poker is one of the oldest card games around, and there are variations throughout the world. In the United States, it’s the most popular game, and it’s been called the national card game. The main feature of the poker game is bluffing. Players may bluff their way to winning, or they may be bluffing to win by making the best possible hand. Although it’s not clear when or how the game was first played, it’s believed to have been taught to French settlers in New Orleans by Persian sailors. In fact, it’s possible that the name “poker” derives from the German pochen, or “card box.”
As with any vying game, there’s an element of luck involved. But, with a little bit of practice, players can get a good sense of how the game is played, and they can choose their actions on the basis of probability and intuition. And, the true art of the game is in determining when to bluff, when to fold, and when to call.
