The Daily News – New York’s Hometown Newspaper
Founded in 1919, the Daily News considers itself New York’s Hometown Newspaper, informing everyday New Yorkers about their city and more. It is known for zesty headlines (perhaps most famously “Ford to City: Drop Dead” during the financial woes of 1975), gossip, city coverage and star columnists such as Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill. The newspaper is currently owned by tronc, the media company that emerged from the Tribune Company, and its headquarters are in the Daily News Building at 450 West 33rd Street (formerly known as 5 Manhattan West).
The News once had local bureaus throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. In 1948 it launched WPIX-TV, whose call letters were derived from the newspaper’s nickname, and later bought what became WFAN-FM (now known as WSJD). The News also owned a radio station called AM 1200 The Answer and built a huge globe in its lobby that reportedly served as the model for the Daily Planet building of the first two Superman films.
In recent years, the News has exhibited a moderate-to-liberal bias. It is often contrasted with the more right-leaning New York Post. The News has a high AllSides Media Bias Rating of Left, meaning that its content strongly aligns with liberal thought and/or policy agendas.
Student News Daily is an independent website that strives to provide the best news and information for students and teachers. It is a not for profit organization that relies on donations to support its mission. Donations help to keep the site running so that more and more educators can have access to this amazing resource!
Our mission is to help educators find the latest news and articles from around the world, and bring them to their classrooms in a fun way. We believe that it is essential to teach our students how to evaluate and synthesize the news they see on TV, online, and in the newspapers. By teaching them how to distinguish fact from fiction and to be critical thinkers, we will create a generation of informed citizens who can make good decisions in the face of conflicting information.
